The milk of a cow within 3 days of calving is significantly different from that of ordinary cow milk, which is called bovine colostrum. Bovine colostrum has high content of white matter and low content of fat and sugar. In the 1950s, it was discovered that colostrum contained not only thick nutrients, but also large amounts of immune and growth factors. It is known as the “health food of the 21st century”. So what is the effect of bovine colostrum in the end, and how to retain it, let’s go to see it.

First, the effect and function of bovine colostrum

1, enhance immunity and resistance, prevent the occurrence of various diseases.

2. Promote children’s bone growth and tooth development.

3, promote the growth and development of brain cells, improve intelligence.

4. Strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis in old age.

5, accelerate post-disease and postoperative rehabilitation, enhance physical fitness, reduce the incidence of disease.

6. Regulate intestinal flora, promote gastrointestinal tissue development and wound healing.

Two, how should bovine colostrum be retained

A cow can produce about 100 kg of colostrum during a colostrum period, while her calf can only drink 20 to 40 kg. The remaining colostrum can be saved for future use by calves and other calves in three ways.

1. Natural fermentation method

The extruded colostrum is filtered with gauze, poured into a clean plastic bucket, covered with a bucket lid, placed in a cool place indoors, and left to ferment naturally. Due to the high degree of colostrum, use a clean stick to agitating once or twice a day to prevent solidification. At room temperature of 10 to 15℃, the fermentation was good in 4 to 6 days. 15 to 20 ℃ only takes 2 to 3 days. The fermented colostrum is beancurd in shape, yellowish in color and has a lactic flavor. It can last 30 to 40 days if kept well. During the retention period, the milk should be stirred twice a day with a cleaning stick, and obsolete or smelly colostrum should not be fed to calves.

2, adding acid fermentation method

When the temperature exceeds 20 ℃, 1% propionic acid can be added to colostrum, and 1% formalin can also be added to prevent nutrient loss and ulceration. After adding acid, stir the mixture evenly, block it and let it ferment naturally. The fermentation can be finished in 2 to 3 days, and the exercise days are the same as the natural fermentation method.

3. Freezing method

Good retention of colostrum, high quality, its storage period can be up to 6 months. If the colostrum is not properly stored, the deterioration of the colostrum will occur, such as stratification, stale, increased acidity, and so on, which will reduce the digestion and absorption rate of the immune globule egg white. Refrigeration or freezing can usefully extend the shelf life of colostrum, leaving it with little change in nutritional factors, PH, and acidity. Frozen colostrum in about 50 ℃ water bath thaw, do not boil and high temperature thaw.

Colostrum refrigeration retention period is about 7 days. If the calf is born and its mother suffers from mastitis or dies, and the calf is unable to eat the colostrum, it can be replaced with the colostrum of another healthy cow near calving time, artificial colostrum can be replaced or fed with the reserved colostrum. The preparation and feeding methods of artificial colostrum are as follows: adding 100 mg of oxytetracycline or 100 mg of aureomycin and 2 000 units of vitamin A to the normal milk per kg; The first time to feed the castor oil or liquid paraffin wax 50 ml into the milk, can promote the mecano rolling; After 5 days, vitamin A was stopped, the dosage of oxytetracycline was halved, and oxytetracycline was stopped after 20 days.
