A, leaf distinction
Elm leaves are single alternate, the leaves are ovate-ovate or oval-lanceolate, and the edges of the leaves have multiple serrations.
Sassafras leaves alternate. At the top of the branch clusters, elliptic or obovate, 9 to 18cm long, 6 to 10cm wide, the apex of the leaves gradually become pointed, the base appears cuneate, the leaves are entire or shallowly lobed, the apex of the lobes is slightly obtuse, the leaves are papery, green below, gray-green above.
Second, the flower distinction
Elm flowers hermaphroditic, flowers are purple-brown, cymes clusters, flowers in early spring before the leaves flowering or flowers and leaves at the same time.
Sassafras inflorescence terminal, 4 to 5 cm long, with several small flowers, flowers are yellow, about 4 mm long, flowers have six petals, lance-shaped, about 3.5 mm long.
